Class Descriptions

Fundamentals of Belly Dance: This class will offer an introduction to the basic elements of all bellydance. In it you will explore your body's potential for flexibility and muscle control and learn to execute isolated movements with fluidity and rhythm. Students will work toward building combinations of movement inspired by music from the Middle East.

Level 1 Tribal Belly Dance: Basic Moves: This class will teach you the basic movements and combinations of the Kajira Djoumahna/Blacksheep Bellydance format of American Tribal Style Bellydance. Classes will focus on technique of executing the various movements, transitioning from one movement to the next in an all-class improvisational format, and learning how to play zils (finger cymbals) while dancing. Christina is a certified instructor in the Kajira Djoumahna/ Blacksheep Bellydance format.

Level 2 Tribal Belly Dance: Improv and Combinations: The second level of Tribal Bellydance will focus on intermediate combinations and improvising with small groups within your class. Basic technique will be reviewed and improved upon as the dancers become more independent of the teacher-led class format. Completion of at least two sessions of Tribal Level 1 or instructor approval is required to take this class.

Level 3 Tribal Belly Dance: Advanced Variations: The highest level of Tribal Bellydance will have the class functioning as a troupe, improvising together more naturally and working on Tribal Fusion choreographies. Advanced combinations will be taught as well as partner improvisation, balancing props, floorwork, and musical interpretation. Homework may occasionally be assigned and there will be performance opportunities for this class level. Completion of at least four sessions of Tribal Level 2 and instructor approval is required to take this class.

Level 1 Egyptian Belly Dance: Basic belly dance technique and routines, including an introduction to finger cymbals or veil. Level 1 must be taken two or more times before advancing to Level 2, including one theme of veil and one theme of finger cymbals. No prior dance experience necessary.

Level 2 Egyptian Belly Dance: Intermediate/Advanced technique and combinations. Class theme will vary from session to session and may include specialty themes such as Study of Arabic Rhythms or Advanced Finger Cymbals. Please bring your veil and finger cymbals to every class. Homework is occasionally required. Pre-requisite: both themes of Level 1 (veil and cymbals) and instructor approval.

Class Attire: Leotards or leggings and a fitted top. Please no big t-shirts, sweatshirts, skirts, sweatpants, or baggy "harem pants." Bare feet, socks, or ballet slippers. No gym or hard-soled shoes. All students will need a set of finger cymbals and students of the Egyptian style will need a 3-yard dance veil.
