Artemis will be teaching a four hour workshop on Turkish Romany dancing on Saturday, July 28 and a two hour workshop on Skirt Dancing on Sunday, July 29. Workshop descriptions are below:

Saturday--Turkish Rromany Dance:
The Turkish Rromany(Gypsy) people have performed in Turkey for the past 1000 years. They were the most famous street performers during the Ottoman Empire. This is the mother of Turkish Oriental dance. Artemis will teach steps, hip and pelvic articulations, isolations gestures and some short combinations. This material is perfect for your Tribal, Oriental or Rromany dance vocabulary. She will also teach about the music, history, costuming and culture of this elusive population.

Sunday--Skirt Dancing:
Skirt dancing is a fusion form which combines Rromany (Gypsy) skirt movements from Russia, Spain, India and Turkey with NON Rromany interpretive dance movement. It is a highly theatricalized and visually appealing art form. Artemis will teach many skirt dancing movements to the Turkish 9/8 rhythm.

A Little About Artemis:

Heralded as one of the leading experts in the United States on Turkish and Rromany dance, Artemis has been dancing, teaching and researching dance history in the United States and abroad for her entire adult life. Artemis is of Greek and Turkish descent. She fuses her love of these cultures with strong academic knowledge and excellent dance technique. She brings her spirited and articulate technique to workshops which include information on the history and cultures that generate the dances she teaches. She believes that we can all use art to build bridges across cultures. Website
